The Ancient Trails of Zagoria

Ride along old caravan paths through mountain valleys, stone villages and a rural landscape where horses remain part of everyday life.

A landscape made for travelling slowly

Long before roads connected the valleys of southern Albania, people moved through this landscape on foot and on horseback.

Merchants, shepherds and local families followed stone paths between villages, crossing high pastures, rivers and mountain passes. Many of those routes remain, threading through a rural world that has changed slowly and still feels naturally connected to the horse.

This journey follows selected sections of the old pathways around Zagoria and the wider Gjirokastër region.

Days in the saddle lead through oak woodland, open valleys and villages of stone houses, small churches and working farms. Evenings are spent in locally run accommodation, sharing food prepared from the landscape travelled through that day.

The experience is shaped as more than a riding holiday. It is a journey into the history and daily life of southern Albania, with the horse providing both the pace and the perspective.

Who Is It For?

This experience is designed for travellers who already feel comfortable in the saddle and want to discover a place through a genuine multi-day riding journey.

It can work especially well for:

  • Intermediate and experienced riders
  • Travellers comfortable riding for several consecutive days
  • Riders confident at walk, trot and controlled canter
  • Couples, friends and private groups with similar experience
  • Guests interested in rural culture as much as riding
  • Travellers comfortable with simple, characterful accommodation
  • Riders prepared for uneven ground and occasional steep sections
  • People who value the relationship with the horse over covering distance quickly

The principal Zagoria route is not designed as a first introduction to horse riding.

Some shorter or gentler formats may be possible for riders with less trail experience, but suitability must be assessed honestly in advance. The local team may request information about riding ability, recent experience, height and weight before confirming the horses and route.

Two ways to experience Zagoria

A shorter introduction to the trails

Spend several days riding through the countryside and villages surrounding the entrance to Zagoria and the wider Gjirokastër region. This format offers shorter daily stages and more time for cultural stops, village life and local food. The exact route is selected around the experience of the riders and may use one base or combine a small number of overnight locations.

Best for: competent riders with limited time who want a meaningful introduction to southern Albania on horseback.

The full caravan journey

Follow a longer point-to-point route into the heart of Zagoria. Ride for several consecutive days along old mountain paths, staying in local homes and guesthouses as the journey moves between valleys and villages. Daily stages may involve long hours in the saddle, rocky ground and sections where riders may be asked to dismount and lead their horses. This version can connect the rural landscapes around Gjirokastër with villages such as Nderan, Hoshtevë, Nivan and Sheper, depending on trail conditions and the final operational route.

Best for: experienced trail riders looking for a physically involving multi-day journey with a strong cultural character.

Both formats depend on rider ability, horse availability, weather and the condition of the mountain paths.

The right horse, rider and route

A multi-day riding journey depends on an honest match between the rider, the horse and the terrain.

Before confirmation, the specialist local equestrian team assesses each guest’s recent riding experience, confidence, fitness, height and weight. This information is used to select a suitable horse and determine whether the proposed route is appropriate.

The terrain may include loose stone, steep paths, river crossings and sections where riders must dismount and lead their horses. Daily hours in the saddle can also be physically demanding, even for experienced riders.

A riding helmet must be worn. Instructions from the equestrian guide regarding pace, spacing and handling of the horses must be followed throughout the journey.

Routes may change because of weather, trail damage, horse welfare or the ability of the group. The local guide or operating partner may shorten a stage or choose an alternative path when conditions require it.

The wellbeing of the horses is treated as an essential part of every decision, not as separate from the safety of the riders.
