Where the Vjosa Runs Free

Paddle through the untamed landscapes of the Vjosa on a private river journey shaped around the season, the water and your appetite for adventure.

A river allowed to remain a river

The Vjosa does not follow a controlled channel. It shifts, widens and gathers speed as it moves through the mountains and valleys of southern Albania.

Near Përmet, the river passes beneath steep slopes and rocky banks, alternating between lively rapids and quieter stretches where the landscape opens around you. From the water, the valley feels different: wilder, more immediate and far removed from the roads running beside it.

But this experience is about more than the rush of rafting.

The Vjosa became Europe’s first Wild River National Park in 2023, protecting a living river system that continues to flow freely towards the Adriatic. Travelling along it offers a rare chance to experience a landscape whose natural rhythm has not been replaced by dams, reservoirs or concrete banks.

Your journey is shaped around current water levels, the season and your group. It may be a single day on the river or part of a slower exploration of Përmet, Langarica Canyon, Bënjë and the communities that have grown alongside the Vjosa.

Experience Highlights

Read the changing river

The Vjosa moves between open, turquoise stretches and sections of active white water. Its character changes with the season, making every descent slightly different.

Paddle beneath the mountains

Raft through a broad river landscape framed by the mountains of southern Albania, with rocky banks, forested slopes and hidden beaches appearing along the way.

Feel the river come alive

Work together through Class II and occasional Class III rapids under the direction of specialist local rafting guides. No previous rafting experience is normally required for standard summer conditions.

Swim where conditions allow

During calmer periods, there may be time to enter the water, drift beside the raft or pause on a quiet riverbank away from the road.

Explore the world around Përmet

Extend the experience beyond the river with local food, small villages, riverside walks or time in Përmet—one of southern Albania’s most welcoming small towns.

Continue to Langarica and Bënjë

Add a walk through Langarica Canyon and time beside the naturally warm pools at Bënjë, where an old stone bridge rises above the water.

It can work especially well for:

  • First-time rafters looking for an accessible introduction
  • Couples and groups who want a shared outdoor experience
  • Families with older children, when age and river conditions are suitable
  • Active travellers combining rafting with hiking or cultural exploration

You should be comfortable around moving water, able to follow the guide’s instructions and prepared to paddle as part of a team. Suitability is assessed according to age, swimming confidence, physical condition and the river conditions expected on your date.

Two ways to experience the Vjosa

A day on the wild river

Build a private day around a guided rafting descent near Përmet. After a safety briefing and equipment fitting, join a specialist local guide for several hours on the water. The route combines manageable rapids with calmer sections and may allow time for swimming when conditions are suitable. The day can continue with lunch in Përmet or a visit to Bënjë and Langarica Canyon.

Best for: first-time rafters, families and travellers adding one active day to a wider Albania journey.

The wider Vjosa journey

Spend several days discovering the river and the landscapes connected to it. Combine rafting with walking, village stays, local food and time around Përmet. Your journey may include Langarica Canyon, the warm pools at Bënjë and selected viewpoints or trails above the Vjosa Valley. Rather than treating rafting as an isolated activity, this version places the river within the wider story of southern Albania.

Best for: travellers who want a slower, more complete experience of the Vjosa and the communities around it.

Every journey is adapted to current river conditions, your available time and the interests of your group.

The river sets the conditions

The Vjosa is a living, free-flowing river. Its depth, speed and technical character change with rainfall, snowmelt and the season.

Every rafting descent is therefore confirmed according to current water levels and the judgement of the specialist local river team. The selected section may change when conditions require it.

Before entering the water, every participant receives properly fitted equipment and a full safety briefing covering paddling commands, movement inside the raft and what to do in the water.

Helmets and buoyancy aids must be worn throughout the descent. Wetsuits and additional thermal equipment are provided when required by water temperature and seasonal conditions.

Previous rafting experience is not usually necessary, but every participant must follow the guide’s instructions. Age limits and family suitability are confirmed individually rather than promised in advance.
