The Silent Lakes of Zelengora

Walk through open mountain grasslands between remote lakes, quiet ridgelines and the immense green horizons of Sutjeska National Park.

A mountain made for wandering

Some mountains are defined by a single summit. Zelengora is defined by the space between them.

Its name means Green Mountain—an apt description of a landscape shaped by rolling grasslands, broad ridges and secluded lakes resting in natural hollows beneath the peaks.

The experience begins with a journey deep into Sutjeska National Park, following rough mountain roads towards the open plateau. From there, the pace changes. Trails cross wildflower meadows and pass beneath the summits of Stog and Bregoč, while each rise reveals another empty horizon.

Orlovačko is the best-known of Zelengora’s lakes, but it is only the beginning. Depending on the group, weather and time available, the route can continue towards Štirinsko or Kotlaničko Lake, climb to a panoramic ridge or simply slow down beside the water.

There is no single landmark to conquer here. The experience is the feeling of moving through a mountain that still seems wonderfully untouched.

Experience Highlights

The road onto the plateau

Reaching Zelengora is part of the adventure. A mountain transfer leaves the main valley behind and travels across forest roads and open highland terrain towards the trailhead.

Orlovačko Lake

Set at approximately 1,438 metres beneath Bregoč, Stog and the surrounding peaks, Orlovačko Lake is one of the most beautiful natural gathering points on Zelengora. Its clear water and open grassy shores invite a longer pause rather than a hurried photograph.

Walking between mountain lakes

Zelengora’s lakes are scattered across the plateau rather than grouped in one place. Reaching another lake means crossing the landscape between them—through grassland, gentle passes and quieter sections where very few visitors travel.

A horizon without crowds

There are no busy promenades or developed viewpoints. Beyond the more accessible lake shores, the mountain quickly becomes spacious and remote, with long views across the green plateau.

Wildflowers and mountain life

During early and midsummer, the meadows are filled with mountain flowers and aromatic plants. Birds of prey, deer, chamois and other wildlife may be seen, although encounters can never be guaranteed.

Time beside the water

The day is deliberately not designed as a race from one attraction to another. There is time for a mountain lunch, photography, resting beside the lake and—in suitable summer conditions—an optional swim.

Who Is It For?

For travellers who value wilderness, silence and time in the landscape more than reaching one famous summit.

Participants should have:

  • reasonable hiking fitness;
  • confidence walking for several hours;
  • stable footing on uneven and occasionally wet terrain;
  • suitable clothing for rapidly changing mountain weather;
  • an appreciation for remote places with very little infrastructure;
  • flexibility regarding the precise route.

No technical climbing experience is required for the standard lakes hike.

The route can be adapted for active families, photographers and moderately experienced walkers. Longer lake traverses or the ascent of Bregoč require stronger fitness and previous experience with full mountain days.

Two ways to experience Zelengora

The lakes day — Orlovačko Lake & the Zelengora Plateau

A relaxed private hike centred on Orlovačko Lake and the surrounding grasslands, with the possibility of continuing towards another nearby lake or viewpoint.

The route prioritises time in nature: walking at a comfortable pace, a picnic beside the water, photography and an optional summer swim when conditions are suitable.

Best for: moderately active travellers, families with older children and anyone wanting a quieter mountain experience.

The wilderness journey — Across the Lakes of Zelengora

A longer route connecting more remote parts of the plateau, designed as either a demanding full day or an overnight experience.

Depending on access and conditions, the journey may include Orlovačko, Štirinsko or Kotlaničko Lake, a panoramic ridge, or an ascent towards Bregoč—the highest summit of Zelengora.

Best for: experienced hikers who want greater solitude and a deeper journey into the mountain.

This flexibility is essential to the experience. Rather than promising one fixed circuit, Borova selects the most rewarding route for the group, season and current trail access.

A gentle landscape can still be truly wild

Zelengora may appear softer than the exposed limestone of Maglić, but its remoteness should not be underestimated.

Weather can change quickly across the open plateau, visibility may deteriorate in cloud or fog, and trail markings become less consistent on some of the longer routes. Mobile coverage and infrastructure are limited, while access roads can be rough or affected by rain.

The local guide or operating partner may:

  • change the selected lake or trailhead;
  • shorten the walking route;
  • avoid exposed ridges during unstable weather;
  • replace an overnight route with a day hike;
  • advise against swimming because of temperature or conditions;
  • cancel a remote section if vehicle access is unsafe.

The itinerary remains flexible so that the group can experience Zelengora without turning the day into an unnecessary endurance challenge.
