Between the Walls of Osumi

Enter a limestone world of narrow passages, hidden pools and waterfalls on a private canyon journey shaped by the changing waters of the Osum River.

Inside a landscape shaped by water

From above, Osumi appears as a deep line cut through the green hills of southern Albania. The real scale of the canyon only becomes clear once you enter it.

Limestone walls rise on either side of the river, narrowing into passages where daylight reaches the water in fragments. Springs emerge from the rock, small caves open above the current and, during the wetter months, waterfalls descend directly into the canyon.

The experience changes completely with the season.

Spring brings stronger water and the possibility of travelling through the canyon by raft. As the river falls later in the year, the journey becomes slower and more intimate—swimming, floating and walking through sections that high water normally conceals.

Osumi is therefore not one fixed activity. It is a seasonal encounter with the same canyon in different forms, planned around the water conditions found on the day.

Experience Highlights

Enter the canyon from the river

Leave the open landscape behind as the Osum carries you between tall limestone walls and into the canyon’s narrow interior.

Pass beneath seasonal waterfalls

In spring and early summer, water spills from the cliffs above, sometimes falling directly beside the raft as you move downstream.

Read a landscape carved by water

See caves, sculpted rock, narrow corridors and unusual formations created by the river over millions of years.

Raft the spring current

When water levels allow, paddle as a team through approachable rapids and the canyon’s most dramatic river passages under the direction of specialist local guides.

Float through the quieter season

As the river becomes lower and warmer, explore selected sections by swimming, floating, river hiking or lightweight individual craft.

Connect the canyon with Berat

Shape the experience as part of a wider stay in Berat, combining the raw landscape of Skrapar with the architecture, food and slower rhythm of the historic city.

Who Is It For?

This experience is designed for travellers who want to enter the landscape rather than view it only from above.

It can work especially well for:

  • First-time rafters travelling during the spring season
  • Active couples, friends and private groups
  • Families when children’s ages and canyon conditions are suitable
  • Travellers comfortable swimming and moving through water
  • Guests looking for an active contrast to time in Berat
  • Photographers drawn to rock, water and changing natural light
  • Curious travellers who enjoy unusual geological landscapes
  • Visitors prepared to let the season determine the exact experience

You do not normally need previous rafting or canyoning experience. However, you should be in good general health, comfortable following instructions and prepared to get completely wet.

Swimming confidence, age limits and physical suitability are assessed according to the chosen activity and conditions on your date.

Two ways to experience Osumi

Spring water through the canyon

When rainfall and snowmelt raise the river, travel through Osumi by raft. After an equipment fitting and safety briefing, paddle beneath limestone cliffs, through approachable rapids and past waterfalls spilling from the canyon walls. The moving water allows the journey to cover sections that become inaccessible to larger rafts later in the year.

Best for: travellers visiting in spring who want an energetic but generally accessible white-water experience.

The canyon at a slower pace

When the river recedes, discover Osumi through a combination of river hiking, swimming, floating or tubing. Lower water reveals more of the canyon’s sculpted interior and creates time to pause in natural pools, move beneath rock formations and experience the scale of the walls from water level.

Best for: summer travellers, families and guests more interested in exploration than white-water excitement.

The final format is confirmed shortly before the experience, once the local team has assessed water levels and canyon conditions.

The season decides the route

Osumi Canyon changes significantly throughout the year. Water depth, current, temperature and access through individual passages are influenced by rainfall and seasonal river levels.

The selected activity is therefore never based on the calendar alone. Specialist local guides assess the conditions and confirm whether the canyon will be explored by raft, lighter individual craft or on foot through the river.

Every participant receives a safety briefing and properly fitted equipment for the day’s activity. Helmets and buoyancy aids are worn whenever the river format requires them, with wetsuits and suitable footwear provided according to the season and water temperature.

Optional swimming or jumps are never assumed to be suitable. They are considered only where the guide has assessed the water depth, current and entry point on the day.

Routes may be shortened, adapted or replaced when the canyon conditions require it.
