Above the Ionian

Climb from the forests of Llogara into the high Ceraunian Mountains, where limestone ridges rise more than two thousand metres above the Ionian Sea.

Where the mountains meet the sea

From the beaches of the Albanian Riviera, the Ceraunian Mountains appear almost vertical. Their pale slopes rise immediately behind the coast, separating the Ionian Sea from the valleys of southern Albania.

The journey begins high on Llogara Pass, among old pines shaped by altitude and wind.

As the trail climbs above the forest, the landscape opens in both directions. Inland lie folded mountain ranges and deep valleys. To the west, the ground falls sharply towards the Riviera, with beaches, villages and the blue line of the Ionian Sea more than a thousand metres below.

For strong hikers, the route can continue towards the summits of Qorre or Çika, both rising above 2,000 metres. Shorter alternatives remain below the highest ridge while preserving the defining experience: walking through a mountain landscape with the sea constantly present beneath you.

This is not a coastal walk. It is a genuine mountain day in one of the places where Albania’s alpine and Mediterranean characters come closest together.

Experience Highlights

Begin among the pines of Llogara

Follow mountain paths through the distinctive forests around Llogara Pass before emerging onto open limestone slopes.

Walk with the sea below you

Gain height above the Riviera until the coastline appears as a narrow edge between mountain and water.

Follow the Ceraunian ridge

Move through a high, exposed landscape of rocky ground, seasonal pastures and broad views across southern Albania.

Choose the right mountain day

Shape the route around your fitness, from a shorter panoramic hike to a full summit ascent requiring sustained effort and significant elevation gain.

Stand above the Albanian Riviera

In clear conditions, look down towards Palasë, Dhërmi and the long curve of the Ionian coast from a perspective few beach travellers ever see.

Return from mountain to sea

Complete the experience with time on the Riviera, descending from cool high ground towards coastal villages, olive groves and the evening light over the water.

Who Is It For?

This experience is designed for travellers who want to see the Albanian Riviera from the mountain landscape that shapes it.

It can work especially well for:

  • Regular hikers comfortable with sustained uphill walking
  • Active couples and small private groups
  • Travellers combining mountain days with time on the coast
  • Guests who value expansive landscapes more than technical climbing
  • Photographers looking for changing perspectives over the Ionian Sea
  • Families with older, experienced walkers on shorter routes
  • Strong hikers looking for a full ascent of Qorre or Çika
  • Travellers prepared to begin early and adapt the objective to the weather

Shorter panoramic routes can be adjusted for moderately active walkers. The principal summits require strong fitness, confidence on steep and uneven terrain and previous experience of long mountain days.

Two ways to experience the mountains

The high Llogara walk

Follow a panoramic route through forest and open mountain terrain without committing to the highest summit. The exact trail can be adjusted around the group, combining several hours of walking with viewpoints over the Riviera, Orikum Bay and the surrounding Ceraunian Mountains. There is more time to pause, photograph the landscape and connect the hike with a relaxed afternoon or evening on the coast.

Best for: active travellers who want the mountain perspective without the length and elevation of a major summit day.

The Çika summit day

Begin early from Llogara Pass and climb towards the high ridge of the Çika massif. This is a long and physically demanding mountain day, with sustained ascent, exposed upper slopes and sections where the trail becomes faint. In clear weather, the summit landscape opens across the Riviera, the surrounding ranges and the Ionian Sea. Reaching the summit is always conditional—wind, cloud, heat or developing storms may require a lower objective or an earlier turnaround.

Best for: experienced and well-conditioned hikers looking for the strongest mountain experience above the Albanian coast.

Both formats are private and adapted to your pace, the season and the wider journey you are building through Albania.

A coastal mountain is still a mountain

The proximity of the sea can make the Çika massif appear more accessible than it is.

Above the forest, the terrain is exposed to sun, wind and sudden changes in visibility. Cloud can form around the ridge, thunderstorms may develop quickly and natural water sources are limited or absent on many routes.

An early start is essential for longer summit days, particularly during warmer months. The guide sets turnaround times and may choose a lower route when temperature, wind, cloud or the group’s pace make the summit unsuitable.

Participants must carry sufficient water, sun protection and appropriate mountain layers. Sturdy hiking footwear is required for the higher routes.

The final objective is never treated as guaranteed. A safely completed mountain day remains the priority, whether it ends on the summit or at a lower point with the best conditions and views.
